Every Tasmanian has the right to receive compassionate and timely support when needed.
Minister for Mental Health and Wellbeing, Roger Jaensch, said too many Tasmanians know what it is like to be in distress and despair, and too many have felt the loss of a family member or friend to suicide.
“The Tasmanian Government is committed to suicide prevention and improving the mental health and wellbeing of all Tasmanians,” Minister Jaensch said.
“We can reduce suicide and improve wellbeing across the Tasmanian population if we work together.
“Every sector, every community and every individual in Tasmania can make a meaningful contribution to improving wellbeing and prevent suicide.
“The third Suicide Prevention Strategy for Tasmania, Compassion and Connection: Tasmanian Suicide Prevention Strategy 2023-2027 (the strategy) was launched in December 2022.
“The strategy’s aim is to reduce suicide in Tasmania with a focus on building more connected and compassionate communities across the State.
“The strategy is being delivered through three, 18-month implementation plans outlining specific actions against each of the five priority actions.”
Implementation Plan One was released in March 2023 and covered the period from January 2023 to June 2024.
We established a strong foundation for this important work by identifying ways to enhance collaboration, strengthening our lived experience capability, and embedding continuous evaluation.
Released today, Implementation Plan Two is part of our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future and covers the period from July 2024 to December 2025.
“Our goal is to build on our existing activities and deliver new actions identified through our extensive consultations,” Minister Jaensch said.
“To develop this plan, we evaluated progress in the first plan, reviewed new evidence and undertook further consultation with Government and community organisations, community members and people with lived experience.
“Suicide prevention is a shared responsibility, and it is up to each of us to do what we can to support each other and to reach out to others in times of distress.”
